I was looking for an alternative solution for SourceOffSite. Though Visual WEB has a 20KBytes/second bandwidth with Bangalore, SOS 's biggest bottleneck is the project tree update is manual. Especially if one were to get the project tree updated from root, it simply takes over 30 minutes or so to do it. Their licensing model of over $300/VSS user makes it very expensive. Recently I learned about VSSConnect which sells for $30/concurrent user.

It was quite impressive in terms of loading the project tree very quickly. In fact, it does connect in couple of seconds. When I tried fresh get of over 4,000 files under 150 subdirs, it took 1 hour and 25 minutes on the above connection. Without modifying any files, I tried to get the latest version on the same dir, it took over 10 minutes to do it. This is still better than SOS taking a lot of time even to build the tree. Of course, there are pieces missing with VSSConnect at this time. For example, I wasn't able to view the comments on check-ins. It also doesn't have a command line client. Though I downloaded a beta release, it has been quite stable so far.
